That’s Whimsy in the Bloody Pail

I think I dropped my whimsy in a bucket of blood.ย

pub sign in England

Or it could have been a tin mine.ย

Cornish tin mine in Pendeen

Maybe those pesky piskies ran away with it when I was knee-deep in pasties.ย  Or, are pasties the antidote to whimsy? That makes sense. Too much of a good thing and all that malarkey.

But where did it go?ย

Cornish signed the south coast

Yes. precisely.ย

When one ball is dropped another bounces up. Better a ball than a door. Doors have their own stories and canโ€™t be used so frivolously. ย

Is she going mad?

It could be so, but who are you to judge?ย

*Inner reflection*ย

So, I dropped the whimsy and picked up the art philosophy. Having many a mask turns out to be quite fortuitous. Like having multiple personalities.

I won tickets to a prestigious art show.ย  Me. I won. I revelled, I did. I revelled even more when I discovered that another family member and an artist for realz were the other winners.

Is that not a sign?

I have always revered the artist, particularly when you meet them face to face. Theyโ€™re an odd kind of celebrity. For a start off, they have talent that I crave and they have this bonkers kind of attitude that I rather like.ย

Off we went to the show which was held over three days. I went to all three days because my ticket allowed it and I learnt all manner of things and came away believing I could paint like a master.ย

artist painting oils on canvas

Believing? Knowing. Yes, I could feel the savvy being summoned! ย

All I needed was all the right materials which they kindly provided at โ€œshow priceโ€ in the art tent.ย  Many a brush, paint and magic ink pencils were purchased and glee filled my body like the holy spirit.ย

I watched demonstration after demonstration on how to paint.

Artist painting poppies

Be loose and free…

No problem. Iโ€™m always loose and free.

Most artists struggle with this concept and are too tight and too particular…

Not me, your honour. I canโ€™t be arsed with particulars. If a painting takes more than an hour Iโ€™m bored.

You have to look for shapes, not details…

Well, hello my very world. I never pay attention to detail. Who needs pernickety detail?ย  Far too time-consuming.ย  Iโ€™m all about the abstract. Slap it on. Tell everyone itโ€™s a dystopian metropolis.ย

The mind will fill in the gaps and tell the story…

Oi, back off artist. Iโ€™m the Art Philosopher.

I tried to avoid the painters that were very detailed in their work because thatโ€™s just showing off.ย

‘You may as well take a photo,’ I murmured bitchily. (Thatโ€™s envy right there.)

I managed a rather passive-aggressive conversation with a posh lady at a stall who was minding it for someone else. The paintings were glorious and painted on board rather than canvas.

Hmm, I like this board. I think I might get some.

Itโ€™s MDFย  ย  Prime it and paint on top.

Yes. Looks about 4 mm

No, itโ€™s 2 mm

No, I think 4. Minimum 3 ย ( I felt my inner Boudicca rising. Swords and all)ย

Itโ€™s 2.

Hmm, no.

I got pulled away by my accompanying others.

Thatโ€™s the most passive-aggressive conversation Iโ€™ve ever heard, they said.

How can it be 2 mm? Thatโ€™d be paper. Thin card at the most. Sheโ€™s not even the artist,ย I whispered aggressively.ย

The very next day I went to B&Q to prove my point. No MDF or hardboard was to be found under 6 mm.ย  However, online at an artist shop I found it.ย  But she’s still wrong. I know my millimetres. I know what I saw.

I am now primed and ready to go and have an interesting idea on how to incorporate some art in support of my stories.ย  This could be the next best thing since barefoot painting. (Thatโ€™s a thing. I witnessed it in real life. I thought it rather clever because it stops you from getting paint all over your shoes. I was told thatโ€™s not why they do it. )

In the spirit of artful enlightenment, I had my nails painted cornflower blue instead of my go-to classic red.

cornflower blue nails with flower patternย

Iโ€™m not a fan.

Every time I look at my fingers it makes me jump and I feel like I have some sort of disease.ย

Still, art is supposed to be uncomfortable, isnโ€™t it?

*Drops paintbrush and wanders off to find whimsy.*

I like the blue claws. The red color was fine, but I like blue. HOWEVER, I think that you should avoid cornflower blue lipstick and a blue clown nose. There are things on the planet that are better off red.

It takes a lot of time and detail to write because every word counts in a story and a novel is over 100,000 words. Some say that paintings require the same level of 100,000. I don’t think that’s true but the muse must still be present. Your water colors are glorious.

Well, thank you, Larry! I suppose in this instance you can say they’re ‘Blunique’

A blue clown nose is only given to trainee clowns who fail their indiction.

I don’t necessarily agree with that. And not because it suits my agenda! There have been some classic books that fall into novella category and some excellent paintings that probably didn’t take too long. I think it’s less about the time or the length but more about the level of skill. Anyway, less is more, right?

And thank you for that glorious compliment!

Juliette,

I am most pleased you went to an art show (the word โ€˜festivalโ€™ is below my taste). Godfrey, however, will not stop pestering me to remind you he is still waiting for his water colour painting for his office in the Cotswold House. Please do hurry along with it so I can get him out of my hair.

In other news, I was at my beloved cousin Jacquelineโ€™s house in Staunton Harold a couple of weeks ago, and do believe I saw you out of the window. Is this correct?
If so, arenโ€™t the grounds lovely? I will never understand why she lets the public among them. I attempt to dissuade her from doing so each time I see her, but to no avail. It was pleasant to see you, though. I would have greeted you but I was in the middle of a very important afternoon tea.

Please do finish the painting for Godfrey.

All the best,

Kitty. X

Kitty!

How lovely to hear from you. Yes, I was at Staunton Harold and said to my colleague – I’m sure Kitty’s friend lives in this estate! – sorry to have missed you and yes, the grounds were beautiful. I was sad to have missed the water lilies as they are always so beautiful but I made up for that disappointment by having a wonderful flatbread in the courtyard.

I’m nearly done with the painting for Godfrey, I was just having a perspective issue with his stance on the green. All is good now and it won’t be long. I’ll drop it the Wall of Frames once Godfrey has okayed it. Looking forward to seeing you some time soon, Kitty.

I like to go to art shows, but there few artists there that I find very talented. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though, and those artists have to be weird to absorb any criticism.

I love these king of art shows. I’m always amazed at the talent people have or how several people can look at one thing and draw or paint it so differently. That’s art to me.

Aren’t all creatives weird? In a good way of course!

Jules! Great piece and I so understand your quandary. Your water colours are wonderful-you paint as you write.
Art shows can give bits of info that find their way into your creative work-or not! Sometimes the shows are enough to inspire me to get back to my craft and other times they are simply a way to train my eye.
Have you ever felt torn- that you needed to be creative but werenโ€™t sure what was next? It is quite daunting and the feeling seems to linger.
Your blogs and travels inspire me to get out my camera or to write again. So thank you!
Keep writing!

Hello Cory!

Thank you for your kind words.

Yes, I always come away from things like this with utter belief that I can change the world. It’s no different from when I come out of the cinema after seeing an action film and believe I can now become a Charlie’s Angel or sleuth.

I always feel torn. I am unable to sit with just one thing for any length of time without getting frustrated. Or, yes, I wonder what the next thing is!

Well that makes me happy! I’m all for people getting outside and doing things and some of your recent travels have looked fabulous! Thank you too!

Janet, despair thee not! I miss Texas terribly. I just don’t have the funds at the moment because the Government are taxing the last breath out of us all and just trying to stay in the game is tough going.

I will be back some day soon, I promise. I miss y’all monumentally. Sometimes I can’t even play my country and western playlist because it makes me feel like I’m grieving for a life once lived. Ugh.

Thank you for stopping by. Make sure you come back ๐Ÿ™‚

Jules, would suggest you check the weather forecast before making a return trip to Texas. Our recent Central Texas weather will take the breath right out of someone from cooler climes.. Mrs Cletus is looking forward to a trip back to her cooler, native Deutschland to reacquaint with her family after the Covid and required vaccination mess. One more point…avoid the democrat/liberal strongholds such as “Little Moscow on the Colorado” (Austin) and Houston like the plague.

I’ve heard it’s hotter than hell at the moment! I’ve experienced a few summers in Texas where it felt like the air would catch fire.

A trip to Germany would be a good idea – get to around 21 C and have a beer!

I’m more of a “get into the thick of the small towns and countryside kinda gal” they’re my favourite places rather than the big cities.

Thanks for the visit, Cletus

i faint at the sight of blood, that’s why i became a TV doctor. all doctors are like Gregory House, right?

they say never meet your heroes but i always do. do you think Trent Reznor would mind if i peed my pants in the autograph line?

beautiful paintings: i love the one with the group waiting for a bus that will never come. and Black Swan the REAL last scene. i’ve been told you need a photographic memory to paint…

refreshing seascape out of a Ray Harryhausen movie.

NAILS DID!!! lovely cornflower blue, mah dahlin, the same blue as Kurt Cobain’s guitar!!! takes me back to making corn and flour tortillas with my grandmama in El Salvador. we’d grind the masa by hand, took 2 weeks to make one tortilla. back then they weren’t called street tacos, they were called TINY tacos…

If all doctors were like House we would be cured of all ills, my sweet.

You should never meet your heroes because they belong on pedestals. That way we are always striving to climb. However, if you can nick a heroes magic cloak then I say go for it.

A bus only comes ten minutes after you need it.

Nails did! I am now a mermaid. Or an ice Queen. Or a mermaid Queen? I went to the doctor yesterday and had to explain to him that I decided to try blue nails in order to creatively grow but that should not stop him taking me seriously. I’m not sure he was on board.

Do you remember Paint Along With Nancy? Nancy Kaminski, I think her name was. Used to be on the telly of a lunchtime. You’re probably too young to remember that. There’s an American version with Bob Ross often repeated on one of the cable channels. These people are skilled artists and it’s interesting to watch a painting come together, but… you are literally watching paint dry. On the telly.

Of course, Rolf was the best, but we can’t talk about him, nowadays.

Paintings don’t do much for me, but good luck with it. Some of yours that you have shown on here, are pretty good.
I much prefer photography… something else I know you have a talent for.

Artist, photographer, author, philosopher… where does it end?

Bob Ross was a genius. He makes everything look so easy.Little fluffy clouds and happy accidents!

You forgot to mention manhole cover finder, door woman and travels better than Judith Chalmers as my other talents. That’s where it ends, Masher.

Still, I haven’t learn to ride a Triumph bike yet…

Ah yes, art.

Sometimes it’s best to just walk away.

Or sit for hours on a chair staring at people.

Personally, I prefer to do that sort of thing on a balcony.

There’s a great set of Imperial (post first world war) paintings at the Imperial War Museum. You should go there on your next visit to England.
